LET'S GET THE BALL ROLLING
In researching BB-8 today, we learned a new word: holonomic. In robotics, a robot is considered holonomic "if the controllable degrees of freedom are equal to the total degrees of freedom." (Thanks, Wikipedia.) The mechanism Disney filed a patent on was a system which "facilitates holonomic motion of a drive with respect to a sphere such that a holonomic drive or drives may be maintained at a relative position with respect to a sphere." Which we think means his little head stays on top, relatively, while controlling the rest of his body which can go any which way. Pretty dang cool. This BB-8 unit is not considered holonomic, which is good because you really don't need that kind of mobility in a cushion. Except maybe during pillow fights. Instead of whirring around and careening off of things, this little guy's happy to sit quietly on your couch and watch episodes I-VI with you. It's good to know your history.
